I totally understand the social awkwardness you speak of. We are all trying so hard to be good and holy toward our peers. But one thing we don't realize is that if we stop thinking so much on it and merely start loving people (much how you described at the end), then there would be no reason, no time really, for that self-consciousness. My brother-in-law one time had a Lenten resolution to always act as if the one person he was speaking to at that present moment was the most important person in the world and love them accordingly.
